About the piece
Several events contributed to the composition of this piece. I was struggling with my relationship with God, and my closest friendship had seemed to come to an abrupt end. I found myself reading poems, and I came across Sara Teasdale's poem; "The Flight". After reading the poem I immediately felt a deep connection with the text. The fighting between devotion and doubt had a deep resonance within me. The questioning in the text reminded me of a sense of anxiety. The words “Hold me” to me bring any and all racing thoughts back together, and they should be sung with a sense of relief. Writing this piece made all doubts in me go away. It is always important to remember where you came from and who knows what lies ahead.
